Social Media Thumb 800 SM Breaking up with your Social Media for Christmas

You may have already seen the BeSocial post on How Social Media is Ruining your Love Life and of course, that may be a bit farfetched as it definitely doesn’t automatically destroy every romance but it is a huge part in present day relationships. What if you broke up with your social media? At least for a little bit anyway.

I remember when I was in school years ago I would race home after, sit at my desktop and scroll through my just registered Facebook account after going on MSN and Myspace then all of a sudden Myspace was obsolete and Facebook was on my phone and Twitter was on my phone and Snapchat and the worst one of all for me… Instagram!

Social Media is good for sharing what’s on your mind (but be careful and wary) and scrolling through on your cigarette break or while waiting for somebody. We’ve all heard, we all know it’s tacky but it’s addicting and a light way to get through awkward moments alone. However, there should be line, a cut off.

The holidays are just around the corner. You’re going to see some family you haven’t seen in maybe a year and perhaps you’re meeting new family. Is it really such a big deal to log off of Facebook? What do you really plan on posting? Photos of your dinner (newsflash: we’re basically all eating the same thing) or maybe your presents (this is the tackiest trend, I swear.)

So why not make a goal, turn off your notifications for anything that doesn’t require immediate attention. Maybe play a little game for every hour you go without give yourself an extra slice of cheesecake or every time you do go on you have to pass up dessert.

Let your family see your face without a selfie. If you really want good memories bring or borrow a high quality camera. There is this new taboo that now everybody who has a camera thinks they’re a photographer and that’s because its more simple now to learn how to white balance and set exposure on cameras. Make the photos count, perhaps dump them all into an album after or literally make a real album to bring to next Christmas. Your grandma will love it.

I think we’ve lost a bit of that magical feeling associated with Christmas because of the fervent need to expose every morsel of ourselves online. I definitely don’t think we should drop it cold turkey or never go on again. You should appreciate your generation and one day when it changes you’ll be telling the future about these days. For a little bit though just embrace the present and the presence of everybody in it. Wait to send them funny cat pictured when they are far away. In the mean time eat and enjoy your food without #foodporn and look at how beautifully decorated everything is and talk to everybody.

Send some real Christmas cards and exchange actual phone numbers. Stop counting down the minutes until you have to go. Log off, shut down and enjoy. Make a goal to not go on during dinners. Post and check up before you go and when you get home.

When it’s all over sign back onto BeSocial and keep scrolling. Just a tiny break from social media.

Happy Holidays!
